Die deutschsprachige Gemeinschaft in den USA: Gegenwart und Zukunftsperspektiven

The panel discussion “The German-speaking Community in the United States: Present Realities and Future Perspectives” hosted by Stiftung Verbundenheit mit den Deutschen im Ausland and moderated by Dr. Marco Just Quiles, brought together educational, cultural, and political leaders to examine the vital role of German-speaking communities across the United States and to explore opportunities for preserving German language and heritage across generations.

In his keynote address, Stephan Mayer, Member of the German Parliament, emphasized the importance of cultural connections in strengthening positive transatlantic relations. Panelists Dr. Stefanie Mischner (German Language School Conference), Dr. Ute Eisele (German Saturday School Houston); Katja Sipple (American Heritage Museum); Louisa Kupfer (German Saturday School Alumna); and Dr. Bernhard Seliger (Hanns-Seidel-Foundation Washington Office) represented different aspects of the German American communities and the cooperation between the United States and Germany.

Several key themes emerged throughout the discussion. German language schools, cultural institutions, and community organizations were recognized as essential pillars in preserving German heritage and promoting intercultural exchange between the United States and Germany. Many of these institutions continue to rely heavily on civic engagement and volunteer dedication despite their significant cultural and social contributions.

Speakers emphasized the importance of adapting longstanding cultural traditions to contemporary realities. International collaboration and youth engagement were identified as crucial for ensuring that German-speaking communities remain vibrant, connected, and sustainable in the future.

The discussion further highlighted the broader importance of German-American relations. Maintaining the German language abroad was described not only as an act of cultural preservation, but also as a meaningful contribution to transatlantic dialogue and partnership.

Finally, participants underscored the need for continued support from the German government and its institutions in recognizing the contributions of German-American communities and their positive impact on relations between the two countries. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of strengthening networking opportunities and advocacy efforts among German-speaking organizations throughout the United States.
