AMBASSADOR'S GREETING
More than 40 years ago, representatives of the German language schools in the U.S. founded the umbrella organization German Language School Conference (GLSC) with the goal of offering German language schools support in their organizational and educational work through a network.
Most German language schools were founded after World War II in response to the growing German diaspora in many countries. In addition to offering language instruction, they became places where German cultural traditions were actively practiced, taught, and preserved, while also fostering a modern-day image of Germany.
The dedication of the school management, teachers, and families, who feel a very close connection to the schools due to its cultural offerings, have garnered impressive results. The pass rates for the DSD I and II exams are some of the highest among foreign language schools. Such success should not be taken for granted, especially in times of teacher shortages, pandemics, and high inflation.
Why invest time and effort into learning and teaching German, especially in an era of digital learning?
The answer is clear: To be able to learn a language together with others at a school offering proficiency exams and intensive cultural experiences, connects students to the culture of that language and often also to the cultural traditions of their parents, giving them a sense of home and identity. It furthermore creates lifelong friendships.
Knowledge of a foreign language provides students with a pathway to college and university and is the first step towards building an international career. It goes without saying that acting on an international level is much easier with foreign language skills. Those who learn German are improving their career chances worldwide and in Germany. They can study at a German university which rate among the best in the world. German degrees enjoy a high international reputation, similar to the “Made in Germany” seal of approval. They can also go for a professional career in Germany, the strongest economy in Europe with very close economic ties with the U.S.
I congratulate the German Language School Conference on over 40 years of successful work promoting the German language and strengthening German language schools in the United States. You have played an important role in ensuring that these schools continue to flourish and grow today. With your help, the highest quality language program can continue to be offered for families with German roots as well as for American families with an interest in the German language and culture.
Sincerely,

Andreas Michaelis,
Ambassador of the Federal Republic
of Germany to the United States
